The Golden Girls

the golden girls So last night I dragged my friend Gary down to Keizer to pick up two Buff Orpington pullets. This was when I learned that pullets are young hens and hens are grown hens....anyway, I know the picture is pretty bad, but it was really late! I was a bit nervous about just releasing them in the coop with Cheeky and Pinto in there. I wasn't sure how they would all react. At first Cheeky and Pinto made a fuss and (this was really cute) Cheeky was actually protecting Pinto by making sure he was inbetween her and the new hens. Other than the initial ruckus they seemed to get along wonderfully.

The new hens are about a month older than Cheeky and Pinto and they are both the same golden color so I started calling them the 'golden girls'. I figure I'll name one of them Blanche and the other Rose!

This was a great releif since this week has just been full of animal crisis. First the sick kitty (Feobe), then the TWO roosters and yesterday my other cat, Bear, started sneezing and was congested. So now TWO sick kitties. But Feobe has been much better in the last 24 hours and if I keep Cheeky shut in the coop he wont crow until I let him out. So I'm thinking my uphill climb is coming to an end!

The sun returns!

This weekend was absolutely lovely. The first real summery days here in Portland (95 degrees!). I spent most of the weekend outside with the chicks and Bear. Here are some pictures.

The chicks love being outside! Instead of fighting each other they peck at the grass.

Bear likes to roll on the cement path. He also likes to eat the corn in my garden....

He's got the posturing down for hunting...but not the speed. The little birds in the yard seem to know this and tease him. It's pretty fun to watch.

more chicks

here are some more pictures of the baby chicks (with my actual camera). It's  hard to get good pictures because the red heat lamp makes everything look yellow and if I use the flash they all freak out.....but I got some good shots anyway!

the half-a-chick is 'Cheeky', 'Pinto' is in the back behind 'Sofia the Hen'

Bear often gets  his nose pecked. The chicks have no fear. They have started to dive bomb each other. In the morning they're all wound up and feisty.

RIP P-nut Bush

I can only blame myself. I brought the p-nut bush home to plant it in a proper pot yesterday and set it on the windowsill temporarily. But I forgot about it and when I woke up this morning Bear had ripped the entire plant from it's small pot. It was laying limp and helpless on the kitchen floor, roots dry and exposed. I can only imagine what it went through before I found it.

I think it's time to get Bear some of his own plants. I'm down to just 5 of my original 10 plants. I've never had a cat that demolished greenery like he does. He doesn't even eat the plants, just likes to rip them out of the dirt and bat them around.

Anyway, I digress. Rest in peace dear p-nut bush. You will be missed.

I was caught unawares!

I'm sure most of you have seen this by now, but I still find it amazing. I honestly thought this was a joke when my co-worker sent it to me. I thought they had put two different shots in, just to mess with you.

weekend ho!

Since it's (FINALLY!) Friday and everything I've posted this week was a picture with a link I will recap my 'crazy' weekday adventures. In list form.

(1)Monday I had band practice and a quiz.
(2)Tuesday my office mate and I placed a grow pirate into a large beaker. grow pirate, grow!
(2a)I became a hurricane at home and cleaned like I've never cleaned before. Bear was perplexed.
(3)Wendesday was my brother's bday.
(3a)the peanut bush sprouted green stems!
(4)Thursday, another band practice after being stuck in traffic for over an hour.
(5)Friday (today!) a show! We play Slabtown tonight at, most likely midnight. whoop.

oooh, exciting. One perk of this week was getting a ride home everyday! Not that I don't enjoy my bus time, but man...it's nice to have a ride every once in a while. I also started reading Candide. I get the strange sensation that I've read it before...but it's not familiar enough to be sure.

well, on to the weekend then :)
