This weekend was absolutely lovely. The first real summery days here in Portland (95 degrees!). I spent most of the weekend outside with the chicks and Bear. Here are some pictures.
The chicks love being outside! Instead of fighting each other they peck at the grass.
Bear likes to roll on the cement path. He also likes to eat the corn in my garden....
He's got the posturing down for hunting...but not the speed. The little birds in the yard seem to know this and tease him. It's pretty fun to watch.
I can only blame myself. I brought the p-nut bush home to plant it in a proper pot yesterday and set it on the windowsill temporarily. But I forgot about it and when I woke up this morning Bear had ripped the entire plant from it's small pot. It was laying limp and helpless on the kitchen floor, roots dry and exposed. I can only imagine what it went through before I found it.
I think it's time to get Bear some of his own plants. I'm down to just 5 of my original 10 plants. I've never had a cat that demolished greenery like he does. He doesn't even eat the plants, just likes to rip them out of the dirt and bat them around.
Anyway, I digress. Rest in peace dear p-nut bush. You will be missed.
people who can create amazing things from what most of us see as mundane, everyday objects make me really happy and insanely jealous all at the same time. Elsa Mora is one of those continuously creative people. She created these wonderful characters out of her son's favorite plants in their yard.
one day my terrariums will live in hand blown glass loveliness like this. how lovely. At A+R
A couple of the peanuts have split and are sending out just the tips of roots! I had hoped to make a couple more cups to sprout peanuts in this weekend, but I just didn't find any time. I'm going to move them from the window to a darker side of my desk....it seems that most seeds like darkness when they're sprouting, so maybe it will coax them into growing faster.
This morning I had to drive to work so that I could take my brother to the mechanics to deal with his car this afternoon. The only "legal" parking for staff here is either a 10 dollar parking pass or metered parking (only 8 dollars). Of course it snowed last night and for some reason they don't feel it's necessary to de-ice the metered parking area. So as I pull into the metered area I realize that it's all very icy and it's all down hill! I slipped toward the bottom and almost had a heart attack. Needless to say I parked in patient parking and am crossing my fingers that I don't get caught. Not a good way to start the morning!
now I absolutely must try felting. My plants are looking so cold without sweaters on them! via Papervert's Etsy
